Guard Rails FAQs

The Working at Height Regulations 2005 require that the main guardrail is at least 950mm above the working surface, with a toe board of at least 150mm. No gap in the guardrail infill should exceed 470mm. All systems must be designed to withstand the loads likely to be imposed.

Fixed guardrails are permanently bolted to the structure and are ideal for areas of frequent access. Free-standing (ballasted) systems use weighted base plates and require no roof penetration, making them suitable for waterproofed flat roofs or where membrane penetration is not permitted.

In most cases, guardrail systems on commercial and industrial buildings do not require planning permission. However, for listed buildings or buildings in conservation areas, permitted development rights may be restricted. We recommend checking with your local planning authority if you are unsure.

Most standard guardrail installations are completed within one to three days, depending on the perimeter length and complexity of the roof. We will provide a detailed programme as part of your proposal.

Yes. We offer guardrail solutions suitable for all major roofing types including flat roofs, standing seam metal roofs, and profiled metal roofs. The fixing method is selected to suit the specific roof construction and to avoid damage to the waterproofing membrane.
